Health and safety

Health and safety

  1. Stay alert - The more awake you are, the less likely you are to get hurt.
  2. Wear suitable clothes - work clothes should fit properly. Anything that can catch in machinery or trip you up is hazardous.
  3. Use the right tools - if you need tape, get tape. It may be handier to use a blue tack, but you are more likely to get injured.
  4. Dont mess around - practical jokes can be dangerous, especially around heavy machinery. If you feel the urge to play, resist it until after class.
  5. Be tidy -  Always put away tools when they are not in use. Keep the floors clean, pick up scraps and wipe up spills. A slip or trip can be fatal.
  6. Tell someone - Never fail to report accidents, defective equipment and or unsafe conditions.
  7. First aid - if you're hurt, if you don't act immediately it could become worse.
  8. Dont take shortcuts - Next to sheer carelessness, short cuts are probably the biggest killer of all. If its worth doing something its worth doing right.

Painting and drawing materials- could be ingested through accidental hand to mouth ingestion, spraying, heating or sanding may cause a potential for inhalation of toxic pigments.
Safety Precaution - Obtain a material safety data sheet (MSDS) on your paints to find out what pigments you are using, use tube paints and commercially available inks when possible. Avoid mixing dry pigments.
work in a well ventilated area, wear protective gloves  when working with paints, varnishes and binders, and always  wash you hands before you eat, drink, smoke, or touch your face.

Copyright

How to protect your work with copyright.
A correctly worded notice, that states that the work is protected under law. Although a copyright notice is not required, because work is automatically subject to copyright protection by law, displaying a notice shows that you have an awareness of copyright and take infringements of your work seriously.

How does it affect me?
Copyright exists to protect the rights of those who create stuff. The law states that only the copyright holder can copy, adapt or make available to the public.

How to make sure in not infringing copyright.
If you need to use someone elses work, make sure you recieve permission from the original creator, if this is not possible find something else that is not under copyright.

Consumer insights play an important role in a publisher’s strategies, from acquisitions to pricing and marketing campaigns. For instance this graph shows which genre is currently best selling (adult fiction) and which is the least popular (cooking). Information like this plays a large roll in which books are published and also which books writers should be striving to get published.

Collaboration

Collaboration

Collaboration within the art industry means two or more people combining there skills to create something entirely new or something which wouldn't be do-able alone.

For example, this is (left) Andy Warhol and (right) Jean-Michel Basquiat.

kelly_warholbasquiat_post.jpg

In the early 1980s, Andy Warhol and painter Jean-Michel Basquiat began a series of collaborative paintings.
The two artists collaborated on numerous paintings together. Warhol usually painted first, allowing

Basquiat to layer over his work. On many occasions Basquiat wrote a word, and then drew a line
through it, simultaneously stating and contradicting the word’s meaning.

Da Vinci’s Christ image became the central motif for one of their collaborative pieces named "Ten Punching Bags" it was based on the last super.

Although their collaborative work did not receive very positive responses it is still known as one of the most famous and well known collaborations in Art history.

Hansel and Gretel Illustration number 5

This is my fifth illustration for Hansel and Gretel. It is where they both find the witches house. The isn't image as dark and 'psychedelic' as the second. I accidentally pressed the invert button whilst fixing the levels of the original image, and I prefer the second image than the first. So the second image is the image Im going to run with as this method also will work with my other illustrations.

Hieronymus Bosch- Art

Hieronymus Bosch

Bosch's work included incredible attention to detail and often surreal imagery. Most of his works depicted religious concepts and a lot of his work showed the many sins, flaws, wrong doings and there out comes of human beings,

''The cure of Folly'' is one of Boschs first most known pieces and it dates around 1494. The image depicts the misguided medical facilities of the day and how laughable they were. The inscription reads...
Master, cut away the stone

my name is Lubbert Das"

Through out his entire career he focussed mostly on religious topics and I find this one the most intriguing. This is The haywain a triptych by him, it was thought to be finished around 1500. In the first pannel Adam and Eve are depicted in the garden of Eden and all is well and beautiful, in the second pannel things are getting a little hectic and people are shown engaging in sinful behaviour. in the third panel hell is depicted to show what would happen and where you'd end up if you acted as the people are in the second panel.

Hieronymus Bosch- Life

Hieronymus Bosch

Bosch was a painter from the Netherlands. Although he was not born with this name he was born under the name Jheronimus van Aken and went by many other names during his career. He made his name by mostly by depicting religious concepts. Not a lot is known of Bosch as he left behind no diaries or lettres of any kind. Everything that we know about him has been acquired from accounts from other people. Nothing is known about his methods whilst creating his pieces or the way he was in his daily life, what is even more stressing is that we do not know the exact reason behind his works or if there was any hidden reason for his obsession with painting religious and moral concepts.

Boschs grandfather and father were both artists although none of there works have survived to the present day it is though that one of these men may have taught Hieronymus what he knows and may have even influenced him in what he painted. In 1488 he joined the brotherhood of our lady. The brotherhood was an arch-conservative religious group consisting of members from Boschs home town and also members from all over Europe. Hieronymus married Aleyt Goyaerts van den Meerveen in-between 1479 and 1481, they moved to a nearby town and inherited land and property from her father. The brotherhood recorded Boschs death in 1516.

ancient greece

Ancient Greece

Greek art has a profound effect through the ages, it has influenced many artists and its styles have been reproduced in the modern day. Ancient Greece was dominated by religion, so its clearly expressed in the art of the time.  Most recorded paintings depicted god like figures on vases and walls of beautifully built temples.
Greek religion was focused on various beliefs and cult practices. When it came to greek religion there was not only one god but multiple and all were depicted through art as beautifully posed figures the women were exquisitely beautiful and the males had defined muscles and were ultimately strong and overpowering.

final witch illustration

This image is for when the children first meet the witch. I've decided to make the witch rather beautiful but old, because there is no words in the book that say she's ugly.

Neolithic cave painting.

Neolithic cave painting.

Neolithic in its simplicity means the new stone age, and it was around 40.000 years ago. During this period the first recorded pieces of art have been found. Mostly found in caves on ceilings and walls of the caves. The exact reasons of these paintings are not known, although it has been decided that they were not just for decoration, as many of the paintings were painted on parts of the cave which were hard to reach. It is thought that the beginning of religious beliefs started around this time, as among the paintings found on the walls there was images depicting women as 'goddesses' and bulls being worshipped. This suggested the beginning of religious beliefs in this era.

ancient egypt

The ancient Egyptian civilisation reached its peak around 3150 BC. They originated in North africa and based around the river nile. The purpose of art in this period of the civilisation was mostly for religious and spiritual beliefs.
They preformed elaborate burial procedures which included mummification although all burials included goods for the deceased if you were a wealthier person, you would be buried in a tomb. Among being buried with fine riches and luxuries in which was believed would be taken with you into the afterlife, your life and various relative occasions would be carved and or painted onto the walls of your tomb. For paint they would use various minerals, soot and charcoal.

This is an image from the walls of a burial chamber. These would depict various important moments in the deceased.

Another major main aspect for visual communication in ancient Egypt was the book of the dead. This was a book full of chants, and spells,  it was basically a funerary text used to help people cope with the recently deceased or people that are close to death and what awaits them in the afterlife.

The ancient egyptians were extremely religiously and spiritually influenced in nearly everything they did.

The Witches Sweet House- Research

I like the front door in this image and the multiple chimneys Possibly add this into my own?

Im not too keen on this one I think it looks too simple.

I love the use of colour and odd shapes in this version.

Far too simple. But I like the idea of lollipops in the front.

I love the idea of biscuit stepping stones in the front path, maybe do something similar?

The many faces of Gretel

Research on the different versions of Gretel.

The many faces of Hansel

Some research on the different looks of Hansel.

Hansel....character development,put together

Hansel as a whole

I started by adding all the bottom elements together (shoes trousers)

Then the top half, braces shirt, neck tie.

Drew one from behind.

I mocked up this final, but decided he looked far too old to be the hansel I was looking for, He looks more like a teen than a young child.

I made him smaller and thinner, I do like this attempt, but the braces were all wrong.

I like this Hansel the braces are right and I like the simplicity of the shapes, although Im not sure about his face.

Hansel character development...the beginning

HANSEL

I decided to start with his pants, I thought they should be slightly baggy but not too much.

Next was the shirt, I added braces too keep up his pants because I felt it added more to the outfit.

Brace buckles, I decided to experiment with different buckle shapes, I stuck to the round buckle but added a small section underneath it for the straps to join.
Final shirt design.

shoes, it was difficult deciding what shoes to add to hansel because I wasn't sure wether to use boots or loafers. In the end I decided to mix both.

Hair style, I basically through a load of different hairstyles out on a page on the basic same head shape to see which one  I felt would best portray my Hansel, I even tried adding a hat.

The many faces of a witch

The look of a witch basically depends on the creator, I've researched many faces of witches and so far these are my favourite. Some are too gruesome as I wish to make my witch a tad sweeter and more beautiful as she manages to lure the children inside the house, but once inside her entire persona changes.
