Neolithic cave painting.
Neolithic in its simplicity means the new stone age, and it was around 40.000 years ago. During this period the first recorded pieces of art have been found. Mostly found in caves on ceilings and walls of the caves. The exact reasons of these paintings are not known, although it has been decided that they were not just for decoration, as many of the paintings were painted on parts of the cave which were hard to reach. It is thought that the beginning of religious beliefs started around this time, as among the paintings found on the walls there was images depicting women as 'goddesses' and bulls being worshipped. This suggested the beginning of religious beliefs in this era.
